Kaye’s Perspective: Paul’s Literacy Coach

My journey with Paul at The Literacy Link Reading Center, formerly known as the Dyslexia St. Louis Learning and Advocacy Center, has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my career.

As a trained elementary educator and reading specialist, I have worked with many students who struggled with reading. However, I had never worked with a child who struggled to learn and retain letter-sound concepts in the profound way Paul did.

Early on, I realized that I needed to learn everything I could about the art and science of teaching a student with significant dyslexia. This became a journey we took together. Nearly every aspect of learning to read was incredibly challenging, but the unwavering commitment of Paul’s family— and later, Paul himself-opened the door to small but powerful wins.

Over years and years of continuous, intensive reading therapy, those small wins accumulated and transformed into lasting growth.

Today, those wins have opened an entirely new world for this remarkable young man.
